The Lavender Troupe

Queer arts mutual aid network. Performers, artists, organizers, mutual aid workers — all the same people, often. The name draws on the Lavender Scare (DC's queer political history); troupe is specific to the model — they put on shows and they distribute mutual aid out of the dressing rooms.

Role in the world

The Troupe believes that culture-making is itself resistance — that you can't have a free city without a free art scene. They run public art, protest performance, a distributed safehouse network, gender-affirming morph access, and defense networks for performers ARM has cited.

Acoustic instruments are political objects in 2070. The Troupe famously brings them to Beltway gigs as performance. ARM has cited them for unlicensed cultural artifacts more than once.

Their current visible project is "The Eye That Never Sleeps" — an anti-Argus protest piece staged across three Beltway venues. ARM is paying attention. Argus is paying attention. The Troupe knows.

Public faces

  • Park Min-jae (박민재) — mid-20s, queer, Lavender Troupe + Free Stack-adjacent. Privately Minjae, in the clubs DJ M.J. Runs underground morph fashion shows and Troupe nights. Their own modded sleeves are art and protest, and they are the Troupe's standing link into Annandale.
  • Sable (Devon Marsh) — the performer-director staging The Eye That Never Sleeps. Sharp, theatrical, fearless about the stage as a weapon.
  • Han Mi-kyung (한미경) — 50s, Annandale importer, wardrobe and props for the touring productions. Not a performer and not an organizer — the person who makes sure the show has clothes, and who travels with them. Twenty years with the Troupe; Sable calls her Mi-kyung, everyone younger says Han sajangnim.

Allies and friction

  • Allies: the Free Stack (heavy overlap); the Sankofa Collective; Annandale Koreatown; the Mirrored (mask-coded propaganda partner)
  • Friction with: everyone (the Troupe thinks they all take themselves too seriously). Knits them together anyway by being everywhere.
  • Enemies: ARM (regular cites); Argus (literally being protested); the Spiral Hunt (would love to hunt a Troupe performer)

Where they operate

  • Hwangsa Noraebang (황사 — Yellow Dust): multi-floor karaoke bar / Troupe venue in Annandale. "We're getting room 12" is code for resistance business.
  • The Mok-yok-tang (목욕탕): bathhouse / jjimjilbang. Neutral ground, no weapons, no surveillance.
  • Min Studio: Free Stack-aligned morph atelier in Annandale.
  • Dressing-room safehouses across the Beltway.
