The Free Stack

DC-Baltimore hackerspace network. Descended from Shmoocon, defunct federal IT culture, and salvaged academic compsci. The Free Stack is the local mesh's free zone — they run the deeper layers where corp surveillance thins out.

Role in the world

The Stack liberates software. They run the mesh. They jailbreak everything. They keep the deeper mesh layers free as the surface layers are captured. Going deeper in the mesh is a real political move; the Free Stack runs the bridges between layers.

Their tactics: technical infiltration, distributed organization, mesh maintenance, open-source advocacy. Sometimes naïve about physical operations — great at hacking, less great at evading a Tracer foot patrol, and honest about the gap.

The current visible project is lighting up Mesh Node 7 in old Anacostia — an off-grid mesh node in a flooded neighborhood. If it goes live, the lower Beltway gets a new free communication channel.

Public faces

Patch (Naomi Reyes) — Anacostia-born node operator working to light up Mesh Node 7. Fearless on the wire, green in the field.
Donny Jameson — host of the biggest pirate broadcast in the Bay; part stunt showman, part masked anarchist, running the Free Stack's largest and most exposed signal. Half variety show, half investigative journalism, half mutual aid telethon.
